Inventor of Disposable Baby Bottle Liner
Adda May Allen is best known for her creation of the disposable baby bottle liner that could be thrown away after just one use.
Working as a nurse at Columbia Hospital in Washington D.C. in the 1940’s, Allen designed a plastic liner which allowed the sides to close in as a baby drank milk, helping to limit the ingestion of air, allowing infants to better suck the formula and reduce spitting up and gastric upset. Adda was inspired after watching newborns in her care struggle to get milk out of a traditional bottle, often working against a collapsed nipple. Allen's design was tested out at George Washington University Hospital and later mass produced by Playtex. These liners were also lifesavers for mothers who did not have to do the tedious sterilization process previously required and instead could have convenient disposables.
Unfortunately, there is no documentation as to whether or not she was paid for her invention.
