Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. They begin during the developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person’s lifetime.
Diagnosis is dependent on developmental monitoring that a child is reaching all of their milestones. A delay in reaching milestones does not necessarily mean a developmental disability, but can be evidence towards the diagnosis.
Treatment depends on the diagnosis and severity.
Some common developmental disabilities include:
Administration on Disabilities
American Academy of Pediatrics
American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD)
Association on University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD)
Center for Parent Information and Resources (CPIR)
The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (N.A.C.D.D.)
