Social worker,
University of Alabama at Birmingham
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am from, and currently live, in Birmingham, AL. I recently turned 35 and have an almost 5 year old daughter and 18 month old son. I have been married for over 5 years. I have bachelors in Psychology with a minor in Human Development and Family Studies from Auburn University (War Eagle!). I have a masters in Social Work from the University of Alabama. I have been a social worker for a little over 8 years. I have been a RNICU/CCN (Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit/Continuing Care Nursery) social worker at UAB Hospital for 4 years now. I assist families with emotional, financial, and social support while their babies are admitted to our units.
Why do you like working in perinatal health?
I enjoy helping these families through their journey while their babies are in our care. I enjoy getting to know these families and get real satisfaction when I am able to help them in the slightest with their needs. I also enjoy looking at the babies and getting to know their personalities.
Tell us about working with The Colette Louise Tisdahl Foundation.
They have assisted so many families of mine. They are quick to respond and provide services, not to mention very personable! My families are incredibly grateful for their services. They’re my favorite resource to use!
How would you describe the importance of social workers?
Social workers help people navigate their own world. When families are in crisis, such as having a baby in the RNICU or CCN, they often don’t know where to begin or how to adjust to their “new normal.” Social workers bring a personal and empathetic component to situations that can be difficult and overwhelming. Social workers offer the emotional support that people may not otherwise get in other situations.
What advice would you give families in crisis due to pregnancy complications, NICU stays, or loss?
There is nothing that you could have done to cause this or prevent this. Often times, just listening and empathizing is the best thing to do in these times.
Greatest professional achievement: Getting my LICSW and PIP
Favorite form of self-care: Getting manicures and pedicures as well as shopping on Amazon. Also, catching up with friends over the phone.
Currently binging: Surviving Death
Favorite book: The Hunger Games and Maze Runner series
If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who and why?: My grandfathers. I never met my father’s father (he passed when my dad was 10) and I was only 18 months old when my mother’s father passed.
Go to song in karaoke: Friends in Low Places by Garth Brooks
Best advice ever received: Always make direct eye contact when interviewing or when you want to appear confident and in control.
Describe yourself in five words: Funny, sarcastic, loving, mommy, and someone who is up for any new experience.
Extrovert or Introvert?: I’m a combination. I’m an introvert with new people, but once I get to know you and I am comfortable with you, I am extremely extrovert.
